Understanding & Maintaining Your Lithium Leisure Battery

For motorhome, caravan, and off-grid enthusiasts, lithium leisure batteries are a great choice in terms of power, performance, and longevity. To make the most of your battery and ensure years of reliable use, proper care and maintenance are critical.

Here are some of our top tips to keep your lithium leisure battery in peak condition, wherever your adventures take you.

Temperature

Avoid exposing your temperature to extreme hot or cold temperatures, as this can significantly impact its performance and lifespan. High temperatures can accelerate degradation, and low temperatures can reduce capacity and efficiency. It’s also essential to protect your battery from direct sunlight, as prolonged exposure can lead to dangerous overheating.

Charging

How you charge your lithium leisure battery also directly affects its lifespan. For optimal performance, it’s recommended to keep your lithium battery charged between 20% and 80%. This ‘sweet spot’ minimises stress on the battery’s internal chemistry.

Avoid frequent full discharges and charging it to 100% all the time, and instead, try ‘opportunity charging’, which means topping up your battery as and when it needs it, rather than waiting for a full discharge. This method keeps the battery within its most efficient operating range. Also, remember to always use a compatible lithium-ion charger designed for your battery’s specifications.

Handling

Although lithium leisure batteries, like the Teconnex Advanced 100, are very robust, you still need to be careful when handling them to avoid any damage. Physical damage can compromise the internal components of the battery and pose safety risks.

Along with careful handling, keep battery terminals clean and free of debris to ensure a secure connection. Dirty or loose terminals can lead to resistance, heat buildup, and inefficient charging or discharging.

Storage

Proper storage is crucial for maintaining battery health. Choose a cool, dry place that’s protected from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight. For extended storage periods, it’s recommended to apply a storage charge of around 50% capacity.

This prevents the battery from self-discharging to dangerously low levels while minimising stress from a full charge. Additionally, for safety, always store your battery away from flammable materials and out of reach of children.

Monitoring

Regularly monitoring your battery’s health is the best way to keep it in peak condition. Our Advanced 100 Leisure Battery features an integrated Battery Management System (BMS) that optimises performance and allows you to control and monitor your system more easily.

Keep an eye on your battery’s status via the app and be alerted to any signs of malfunction that a visual inspection might miss. Signs of damage or malfunction may include unusual swelling, leakage or significant drops in performance.
